How Do You Help Patients With Dental Anxiety?
Studies show that between 8% and 15% of Americans experience some level of dental anxiety. We understand that these fears are real, and may be related to past experiences. We also know that avoiding routine care leads to a risk of poor oral health and even tooth loss. In order to help our North Hollywood, CA, patients with anxiety, we may suggest dental sedation.
Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Anxiety
Question: How does avoiding the dentist implant my smile?
Answer: When we avoid routine care, plaque buildup forms on the teeth, weakening tooth enamel and inflaming gum tissue. Patients then experience a greater risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Over time, these untreated issues increase the chances of infection and adult tooth loss. Even missing routine dental cleanings increases the risk of serious complications.
Question: What is nitrous oxide?
Answer: Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is administered in a gas form via a mask over the nose. Patients then enter a calm state and remain relaxed throughout the procedure. When the procedure ends, the effects of the gas wear off almost immediately. Patients typically have no memory of the procedure.
Question: Do you have deeper forms of sedation?
Answer: Yes! We have oral conscious sedation, which is taken via pill form shortly before the procedure, and IV sedation, which is administered via IV injection. Both options offer a deep state of relaxation, with the patient having little to memory of the procedure. The effects of both will take time to wear off, so patients should arrange for a friend or family member to drive them home and should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery for 24 hours.
Question: Which one is right for me?
Answer: We will look at your medical history, your level of anxiety, and the procedure or procedures being performed to decide which option will suit you best!
