Between candy canes, Christmas cookies, and hot chocolate, this is a time a year for cavities. Fortunately, we have a few tips (and preventive treatments) to help children in North Hollywood, CA, stay cavity-free throughout the holiday season!
First, we may suggest preventive treatments to reduce the risk of cavities. For example, we may apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth. The procedure only takes minutes to complete, and helps strengthen the outer enamel. We may also prescribe dental sealants. Children often have trouble reaching the rear molars when brushing and flossing, which allows food to remain stuck between them, causing cavities to eventually form. However, the sealants place a protective covering over these teeth, preventing food from becoming stuck between them. They will wear away with time and if needed, we can reapply in a future visit.
During this time of year, try to limit how many sugary sweets your little ones consume. In addition, ask them to wash down their candy with a glass of water, which helps rinse away the sugar particles. Be sure your little ones are brushing and flossing daily. For Christmas, maybe consider giving them a fun set of toothbrushes and toothpastes with their favorite characters on them? Encouraging good dental hygiene helps them take better care of their smile as they grow up.
We also suggest scheduling a checkup and cleaning after the holidays.
