Help Your Kids Avoid Tooth Decay!

Cavities could lead to discomfort, infected teeth, or in extreme cases, premature tooth loss. Which means helping your little ones enjoy better oral health is crucial! In today’s blog, your North Hollywood, CA, dentist, explains what you can do to encourage better dental hygiene habits, and avoid the onset of cavities and other issues!

What Causes a Cavity?

Teeth of all ages are protected by a thin layer of tooth enamel, which is incredibly strong. However, often poor oral hygiene, combined with a diet high in sugar and starch, could lead to plaque buildup coating the teeth. This bacterial byproduct then weakens and erodes the enamel, allowing bacteria access to the inner, sensitive layers of tooth structure. A cavity then forms, and the tooth could eventually feel sensitive or ache as a result. Treatment is crucial for avoiding infection or abscesses or even the risk of losing the tooth altogether.

Brushing and Flossing Properly

To help safeguard little smiles, your kids need to brush their teeth when they wake up and once more before bed, for about two minutes each session. Make sure they use an age-appropriate toothbrush and a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Picking out a toothbrush or toothpaste with their favorite cartoon or movie characters on them can help make the process fun, as could podcasts or apps designed to walk them through the process. Kids also need to floss before going to bed at night, and for many a floss pick could be easier to handle and use.

Avoiding Sugary Snacks and Drinks

Along with brushing and flossing, kids also need to watch what they eat and drink. Often times, our favorite snacks could weaken tooth enamel and inflame gum tissues. Try to cut back on items high in sugar and starch, such as candy or chips. Beware of sugary beverages, such as sodas, energy drinks, or even fruit juices and sports drinks. Instead, drink more water and try to pick snacks like fruits, veggies, whole grain crackers, yogurts, cheeses, and nuts. These items also provide essential vitamins and nutrients for your smile, strengthening your teeth. If you have any questions about protecting little smiles from home, then contact our team today. We’re also here to address emergency situations, such as aching or damaged teeth, and we follow strict health and safety measures!
