The Difference in Straightening Teeth with Invisalign®

Teeth that aren’t aligned properly can be prone to several different types of problems, and can have multiple consequences on different areas of your oral health. However, for many patients, the main motivating factors in seeking treatment to correct their crooked teeth are often similar, and include improving their smiles’ appearance and how their bites feel when they close them. Today, we explain how Invisalign® straightens crooked teeth in a way that address these concerns while keeping the treatment process more discreet and convenient that patients might expect.

Why misaligned teeth need to be straightened

Orthodontic treatment, or the practice of diagnosing and correcting the alignment of crooked teeth, has long been an important part of general dental care. The impacts of misaligned teeth can vary, but when left untreated, the misalignment can cause a wide range of problems for your bite function. For example, your bite may be imbalanced because all of your upper teeth don’t meet all of your lower teeth evenly when you bite down. As a result, some of your teeth may be forced to withstand excessive amounts of pressure, which can force them further out of alignment or cause them to become worn or damaged.

How clear aligners are designed to work

The goal of orthodontic treatment is to straighten crooked teeth before their misalignment leads to further problems with their health and integrity. Traditionally, this includes utilizing carefully placed brackets on crooked teeth and utilizing an arch wire to gently force them into straighter positions. With Invisalign®, clear aligners are utilized to achieve the same gentle force, but without the need for brackets or wires to achieve it. Instead, the aligners are digitally designed to gradually move crooked teeth toward their straighter positions as you change them throughout your treatment.

Benefiting from Invisalign® treatment

The ability to straighten crooked teeth and improve your bite’s overall function without the need for orthodontic braces can make Invisalign® preferable for a number of reasons. For patients who are concerned how traditional metal braces may impact their smiles’ appearance, the most notable advantage may be the nearly invisible appearance of the aligners. Made from clear acrylic, the aligners are nearly undetectable when placed over your teeth, making them significantly more discreet. You can also temporarily remove your clear aligners for a few moments each day, such as when you brush and floss your teeth or eat and drink something, for optimal convenience.
