Protecting Little Smiles This Halloween

When children eat candy, this leaves sugar behind on the teeth, sugar that could mean a greater risk of tooth decay. In order to help protect smiles from cavities and ensure your little ones enjoy their Halloween, your North Hollywood, CA, dentist a few ideas. Find out how you can help prevent cavities and still have a great time!

How Does a Cavity Form?

A cavity forms when harmful bacteria can reach the inner layers of dentin, which make up most of your tooth structure and is sensitive and porous. Outer enamel typically protects the dentin, but poor oral hygiene could weaken and erode the enamel. When we consume lots of sugary treats, bacteria will break down the particles left behind on your smile, creating a layer of plaque that erodes the enamel. The patient experiences aching teeth or sensitivity, and when the decay finally reaches the inner pulp, an infection or abscess could occur.

Keeping Children’s Smiles Healthy

To protect little smiles, we suggest cutting back on how much candy they eat each day. They can also follow their candy with a glass of water. Brushing and flossing daily will help remove food particles and lower the severity of plaque buildup, keeping smiles healthy. A routine visit for a checkup and cleaning means we can watch for signs of cavities and then remove all plaque and tartar completely, which helps protect the enamel (and the gums). We also have fluoride treatments and dental sealants to help protect children from the onset of cavities, by strengthening the outer tooth enamel and providing a barrier to prevent food from becoming trapped between the hard-to-reach rear teeth.

What Should I Hand Out Instead?

In addition to helping your own kids stay cavity-free, you can also protect other smiles in the neighborhood! When you hand out candy-free treats, such as temporary tattoos, stickers, and party favors (there are tons of Halloween-themed choices), you offer a sugar-free option that is fun for kids of all ages! Candy-free treats are also great for children with food allergies, which could make enjoying most candies and sweets difficult. With a preventive approach to family dentistry, we can help you and your loved ones enjoy healthy, whole, and bright smiles for many years to come!
