Have You Scheduled Your Child’s Back-To-School Visit?

For kids across the country, school is back in session. In addition to picking up school supplies and new clothes, you should consider your little one’s smile. With a back-to-school checkup and cleaning, we can help ensure children in North Hollywood, CA, return to school with their brightest and healthiest smile. What should families expect from these visits?

Why Do Kids Need Checkups and Cleanings?

Without treatment, minor issues like tooth decay could soon lead to serious discomfort, dental infection, or even the loss of a tooth prematurely, causing a greater risk of dental misalignment. A checkup enables the dentist to regularly examine the smile and identify possible problem areas in the earliest stages, treating them before they cause major consequences for a smile’s health and appearance. The cleaning portion involves removing all plaque and tartar from the teeth, a procedure that limits the risk of tooth decay and gingivitis. A cleaning also leaves the teeth brighter and helps control bad breath. Along with improving oral health, studies show that kids attending regular checkups and cleanings tend to have lower levels of dental anxiety.

Should They Receive Preventive Treatments?

We may often discuss preventive treatments to help protect little smiles from the onset of cavities. For example, during their checkup and cleaning, we may apply a fluoride varnish to the teeth. Fluoride, a naturally occurring mineral, has been shown to strengthen outer enamel and protect teeth from cavities. In fact, that’s why we add fluoride to our drinking water. Dental sealants could also be effective. A sealant is a special acrylic coating we apply to the hard-to-reach rear teeth, which prevents food from becoming stuck between the teeth. Children then enjoy a lower risk of decay!

The Benefits of Brushing and Flossing

We’d also love to discuss proper brushing and flossing with you and your children. When we care for our teeth each day, we limit the severity of plaque buildup and help safeguard the smile against cavities and infection. Kids should brush when they wake up and again before bed, for two minutes each session. We also recommend flossing before going to sleep. Children ages three and up should use a toothpaste that contain fluoride, and kids also need to use age-appropriate toothbrushes to make the process easier.
