How Will 3D Imaging Create Invisalign® Aligners?

With Invisalign®, we don’t employ metal braces to correct uneven smiles. Instead, we address misalignment using a series of clear and custom-made aligners. In order to create them, we employ a unique 3D imaging system. How does this technology create aligners and what should patients in North Hollywood, CA, expect from Invisalign®?

The iTero® System

With iTero®, we employ 3D digital scanning technology to plan your treatment and create appliances and aligners that fit comfortably and offer accuracy and precision with your treatment. While today’s blog mostly focusses on how this technology aids in the treatment process, we also use it to create appliances to treat TMJ disorder and bruxism, addressing a variety of oral health concerns and offering a healthier smile.

The Aligners

First, we need to assess the severity of your misalignment. Using iTero®, we analyze your bite and create a series of detailed digital x-rays. The dentist obtains a detailed picture of your teeth, roots, and jaw bone, accurately assessing the extent of your misalignment. From there, we can decide if clear braces are the best choice and if so, we can begin planning your treatment. The digital images we gather of your teeth and gums only take a few minutes to complete, but enable us to craft a detailed 3D model of your teeth. At an Invisalign® lab, experts will employ these digital impressions to design and create your aligners. In addition to more accurate treatment, our patients no longer have to bite down on sticky molds, which would have been necessary a few years ago to obtain an impression. We will also be able to show you a digital mock-up of how your smile will look following treatment!

Treating Your Misalignment

How does Invisalign® treat misalignment? Well, a series of aligner will be created using a BPA-free plastic material. The aligners will be practically invisible when worn. Patients wear them daily for between 20 and 22 hours each day. After around two weeks, they will upgrade to a new set. Over the course of a year to 18 months, the teeth will be repositioned and patients will enjoy improved oral health. The aligners can also be removed before meals or special occasions. If you have any questions about our 3D imaging technology, or about the Invisalign® system, then contact our team today.
