Question: Why do teeth stains form?
Answer: Multiple factors lead to surface stains, such as poor oral hygiene causing plaque buildup to accumulate and make the appearance of stains more apparent. Other causes include drinks with dark pigments (coffee, soda, red wine, fruit juice, and tea), as well as food and drinks high in sugar and other starches. Smoking and tobacco use also discolors the teeth.
Question: Can you remove discoloration in one sitting?
Answer: Our in-office procedure does allow our team to address teeth stains in one visit. We simply place a bleaching gel onto the teeth, which we activate with a powerful curing light. The stains then break up and vanish, leaving behind a brighter smile in one sitting.
Question: How does your at-home system work?
Answer: For more serious causes of discoloration, we may opt for the home-based option. We create a set of plastic trays and then give the patient a powerful bleaching gel. Each day, the patient fills the tray with the gel and then wears it for a set amount of time, usually 30 to 45 minutes. Total treatment typically takes between a week and ten days.
Question: What if my stains don’t respond to teeth whitening?
Answer: If you have intrinsic stains, which means they form below the tooth enamel, then you need more than teeth whitening. In these scenarios, we mask the stains with either dental bonding, porcelain veneers, or a combination of the two cosmetic procedures.
